Description
Escolinas Albarín Blanco is a single-varietal wine, native to the Principality of Asturias. 70% remains in stainless steel tanks and 30% ferments and ages on its lees in Asturian oak barrels from Tineo for three months. At Escolinas we bottle the terroir of Cangas del Narcea (Asturias, Spain) from the finest native grapes of the micro-parcels of the Escolinas estate. The journey began in 2012, hand in hand with the Monastery of Corias. We bottle up to 30,000 bottles in the best vintages, of both single-varietal wines and the classic mezcla canguesa (Cangas blend) that has been made in the area for generations. The estate is made up of just 0.6 hectares of small plots in Cangas del Narcea and Ibias, Asturias, Spain. These small vineyards cannot be mechanized, with slopes of up to 30%, and combined with an altitude of more than 500 meters above sea level, they are among the few true mountain vineyards in Spain. On these steep hillsides the vines survive in slate-rich soils, a particularity of the terroir that naturally regulates the vigor of the plant and results in small yields that produce wines with a fine and elegant profile. The extreme climate of Cangas and its slate soils have been perfectly adapted to by varieties such as Albarín Blanco and Negro, Verdejo Negro, and Carrasquín, which together with Mencía form a group of varieties that give the wines character and personality.
